Zone 0
In response to the wildfires in January of last year and the increase in fire risk, California’s Board of Forestry & Fire Protection developed new rules for building and structure fire safety called “Zone 0”, which is the first 5 feet around a structure. The initial draft rules called for stricter removal of combustible materials, such as vegetation and wooden fencing, within five feet of any structure or building within Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones, which includes Bel Air Hills. There was much concern about the implementation of these rules in existing areas such as Bel Air Hills, and, after community input, the Board issued a new draft of the rules for Zone 0. You can read the new draft here: PRESS RELEASE: Board Releases Latest Draft Zone 0 Regulations Ahead of Southern California Public Workshop.
This matter has not yet been finalized because there is a great deal of concern regarding how these rules will affect areas such as Bel Air Hills.

Sepulveda Transit Corridor Project

In the February issue of Newsbites, we told you that the Metro Board of Directors has approved, what they call the Locally Approved Alternative. Metro’s recommended option, called Modified Alternative 5, would build an underground heavy rail line connecting the Van Nuys Metrolink Station to the Expo/Sepulveda E Line station. The project would also connect to the G Line on Van Nuys Boulevard and the future Metro D Line at Wilshire and Westwood. There would also be a station stop on the UCLA campus. It appears that the underground route will travel through the Santa Monica Mountains more or less along Beverly Glen Boulevard.
Metro held community meetings to inform the public more about the Locally Preferred Alternative and the next steps for the project. People who would like to listen to the virtual meeting, can access the recording here: STC Virtual Community Meeting English 4-24-2026 | Videos & Movies on Vimeo ; and you can view the presentation material here : metro.net/documents/2026/04/spring-2026-presentation-english.pdf/

Our Local Fire Station Needs Help
BAHA has been informed that our local fire station, #109, is in need of certain supplies, like outdoor lights. Apparently, budget cuts have limited their ability to acquire some of these supplies. They have indicated that gift cards from Home Depot would be very much appreciated so they can purchase exactly what they need. BAHA will be considering a contribution to fire station #109 at its next Board meeting. If any members of the community would also like to do so, the firemen at #109 will certainly be thankful when the gift card is dropped off at the station at 16500 Mulholland Drive, L.A. 90049.
