BAHA

Security

BAHA is committed to working with our members and the city to increase the safety of residents.

Recent and on-going initiatives to protect the safety of our residents include:

Neighborhood Security Cameras

After extensive research of available security camera technology and options, in 2021 BAHA contracted with a national company for the lease and maintenance of advanced technology cameras located in three strategic locations in our neighborhood. A big "THANK YOU" to the homeowners who so graciously allowed these cameras to be placed on their property!

LAPD suggests that to be more fully covered we should have an additional three of these cameras. However, for that to be possible, we will need a significant number of additional BAHA members. So please renew (or join if you are not a member) and encourage your neighbors to do so as well!

We are happy to use our cameras to help BAHA members and LAPD with any crimes that occur. There is no charge to BAHA members for this service, however non-members will be charged a fee which will be at least double the yearly BAHA membership fee. Please know that we are a volunteer organization and this help does require significant time and effort. For this reason, we may limit our services to dues paying BAHA members and specific requests from LAPD or other law enforcement agencies. For additional information please see our Security Camera Policy.

Virtual Neighborhood Watch

Join the fight against crime in our neighborhood! LAPD tells us that a Virtual Neighborhood Watch (VNW), comprised of residents' street-facing cameras, would be very helpful in solving crimes in our neighborhood, especially when combined with BAHA's advanced analytics neighborhood cameras.

When a police report of a crime is filed, BAHA will contact VNW members with the date and time of the crime and ask VNW members to check their cameras to see if they captured any useful information. BAHA will then either put LAPD in touch with the VNW members that have additional evidence or will collect that evidence and transmit it to LAPD.

All residents with street-facing cameras, not just BAHA members, are eligible to join the VNW. So, if you have street-facing cameras please SIGN UP HERE.

Crime Monitoring

crime monitoring chart

Although our neighborhood has one of the lowest crime rates in all of Los Angeles, crime has been increasing since the advent of GPS mapping apps (and, for some crimes, since COVID). BAHA has collected property crime statistics in our neighborhood for the period from January 2010 to the present (available to BAHA members upon request). This helps us to understand crime trends in our neighborhood, and to work with LAPD to decrease crime. You can help ensure LAPD has an accurate understanding of crime issues in our neighborhood by promptly filing a police report for all crimes, including package thefts and unsuccessful crime attempts. To file a police report online go to: https://www.lapdonline.org/file-a-police-report/ Or call 1-877-ASK-LAPD.

Security Patrols

BAHA investigated the possibility of getting a dedicated private patrol for Bel Air Hills and compared bids from a few providers. According to our research a dedicated patrol would require a very high neighborhood participation rate and at this time it appears cost prohibitive.

As is the case in other areas of the city, we also have regular issues with MAIL THEFT. On that front, we have three recommendations:

USPS approved locking mailbox

USPS Informed Delivery

Informed Delivery is a system where you can view scanned images of the mail you are supposed to receive each day. This won't stop your mail from being stolen but it will let you know when important mail is arriving and if your mail is stolen you will at least know what was in it.
